The towns and countryside around Antigua Guatemala Offer plenty of choices for day trips. Adventurous visitors may want to hike to the top of the Agua Volcano, for spectacular views of Antigua and the pacific coast far below to the south.
The nearby town of San Antonio AguasCalientes produces some of the finest textiles in Guatemala. Visitors may shop in a small marketon the town square or visit the Maya-Cakchiquel weavers in their homes. Anothernearby town,Parramos, is renowned for its production of fine shoes, sandals and boots, made to order in the small shops of the town’s cobblers. As San Andrès Itzapa, the Cult of Maximòs, or San Simòn is practiced. Visitors can watch as petitioners offer this native “saint” cigars and rum to obtain his blessing. Celebrations for All saints Day, on November 1, feature gigantic paper kites in the towns of Santiago Sacatepèquez and Sumpango, a short drive from Antigua. |
