During Semana Santa, or Holy week, Antigua Guatemala is home to one of the world’s most beautiful religious celebrations. Colourfulprocessions featuring heavy floats carried by men, women and children wind their way slowly through the town’s cobblestone streets, where elaborate carpets made from dyed sawdust, flower petals, pine needles and fruits mark the processional route.
In the churches, altars are decorated with flowers, seasonal fruits and even caged birds. While the most impressive processions occur on Good Friday, the processions actually begin on the first day of lent and continue through Easter Sunday. The processions, carpets and decorated altars form a giant work of communityart, that spills from Antigua’s cathedral into its streets, employing colourful designs, traditions and techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation. |
