With first-rate hotels, excellent restaurants and lots of shops selling local handicrafts, Panajachel is the principal tourism center oflakeAtitlàn. It is reached by an excellent highway branching off from the Pan-American Highway, which offers spectacular views of the lake and volcanoes as it descends from the town of Sololà.
Besides Shopping (and more shopping) , Panajachel offers a museum with exhibits about the origins of lake Atitlàn and Maya ceramics that have been recovered by divers from the lake’s depths. The museum, open daily, is located in the hotel Posada de Don Rodrigo. A butterfly garden near Panajachel offers look at some of Guatemala’s beautiful species of Mariposas. From Panajachel, visitors can walk to the nearby towns of Santa Catarinaand San Antonio Palopò, or catch a boat to the towns of Santiago Atitlàn and San Pedro la Laguna across the lake. |
