RIO DULCE
Rio Dulce, or “SweetRiver,” drains LakeIzabal to the Caribbean. At the river’s upper end, traversed by a long bridge at the town of Frontera, a number of marinas cater to sailboats touting the Caribbean. Sailors stop for a few days or for several tears to enjoy the area’s idyllic tranquillity. The river is a protected area, and much of the tropical forest covering its banks is undisturbed.

Tours offered from Rio Dulce include a boat trip down the river to Livingston, a visit to a natural hot spring and waterfall, horseback riding, kayaking, caving and birdwatching. Several companies also offer tours to nearby Cerro San Gil natural reserve, to Poptùn and to the Quiriguà archaeological site. A boat trip down this beautiful river will produce some unforgettable sights, like the flight of toucans from tree to tree, and memorable sounds, like the howling of monkeys. From Frontera, the Rio Dulce widens in an area known as Golfete, before narrowing as it passes through a deep, natural gorge to the sea. The Chocòn-Machacas wildlife reserve in the Golfete is great place to stop for a hike in the rain forest. Another interesting stop is Ak Tenemit, a charitable organization that serves poor families along the river with school, potable water and medical projects.
